on all of these stories throughout the next three hours. president obama heading to las vegas tomorrow for a campaign rally. the president then expected to hunker down in henderson, nevada, to prepare for that first presidential debate. nbc news white house correspondent, mike viqueira, joining me live. now, mike, the president again, no public appearances today. earlier this week, he was at the united nations. he's been hitting the campaign trail hard. he's been dealing with the fallout from the libya attacks. is he finding enough time to even practice for the debates? >> well, you know, craig, to the extent that the command of the issues will make a difference in these debates, you can say he's getting a lot of on the job training, certainly. but to argue your premise a little bit, the president, as far as we know, is, in fact, practicing for those debates. just yesterday, he spent two hours south of the capital, about a mile from here, the democratic national committee headquarters, where we are told, on deep background, that he was, in fact, practicing on those debates. of course,

they call the 3 ds. dissatisfied, disappointed and disenchanted obama voters. it's about convincing them that over the next four years, you will do a better job to improve their lives. what they're looking for is those, that narrower and narrower slice of swing voters. i mean, he's got a double job to do. >> he had a convention speech and he wasn't able to do it. >> that's why he's got to do it tonight. so but he's got a double job. he's got to talk to those swing voters who are disaffected about president obama, but then make sure his base turns out and he's got to get the base enthusiastic. now, what the base wants and those swing voters want maybe two different things. >> but how many people are still undecided? >> this many. >> but there are still people who are persuadable. >> have debates really persuaded them. >> john kerry, going into that first debate, was seven points behind. after that first debate, he was only two points behind. now, we know he ended up losing because president bush came back and did a better job in the second debate. but it did narrow the gap for john kerry.

. that president obama knows that medicare is-- we're spending too much on it, and his secret plan, he proposed cutting $250 billion in medicare over the next 10 years, which is exactly what the republicans are proposing. people are running away from the reality of this crisis. and i would argue-- i mean, mark's right, the economy looks good but it can go into a tailspin in the coming months, if somebody does not-- even before a new president or obama begins a second term takes office. in this i'm really not overstating this. anyone who knows about not just the fiscal cliff but the issue, this government is going to have to go into the debt market beginning of next year and ask to borrow another $1 trillion or 2 dollars. they couldn't settle this last year or this year. how are they going to settle it next year? >> bob, this sounds awfully bleak, and it's not. i think our prospects are actually quite priet. the private sector has made a lot of progress. american businesses have reduced their cost structure. their profit margins are as wide as they ever. banks are highly capitalized. even americ

's going continue to struggle on the front. i think the obama campaign going in to the debates, doesn't the burden here. but probably would, you know, should talk about what the next four years will be like, and i expect that that will happy during the debate. but i said that here. because i'm talking tactically here. the challenger has the burden. we have a history with barack obama. we have a sense what he's done. we have a sense what he's like and what he will do. when you're the challenger, you have to say why you will be cimpt. and obama did that in 2008, and that's the thing that romney is going have -- i think will be need to do. we are evaluating one of the president as the champion, so to speak in boxing terms. we are evaluating one of the challenger. if you don't play the role of the challenge netter minds of people, well, then it's hard to imagine you'll play the role of the champ well. that's my own sort of two cents on that. >> we all know that the words we use are very important. on the campaign that you worked on, how did the candidate choose which keywords or catch pha
